Well a golden rule in business is to only spend money on something that will add value to your business.
There is no point spending ?100 on something you may not need simply to avoid tax of ?25.
You are basically wasting ?75....

So just spend it on what is essential or what brings in a return !

Thanks for this great list.

A weird and possibly stoopid question that's been going around my head for a while!

Should businesses be too concerned with saving money as whatever they spend on the business is tax deductible anyway?

Desmond
Thanks for the query
With the self assessment system for the self employed it's up to you to declare the figures in your return.
The only time receipts would be requested is when requested by revenue in an audit or through a query.
However, some accountants may ask to see receipts to validate the return.

With church donations, the local priest can supply a receipt based on and direct donations you have made.

Hope this helps.

In the above query re sick pay is the employee's full pay of €3000 for the first six weeks of illness ALL tax fee? I think it is only the SW Benefit part of the pay which is tax free. I await clarification. Thank you. DOF

No Bernie this will not change.
There effectively will be 2 road tax rates - one for the new cars bought after July and one for all others.

People will still need to buy 2007 cars but the market I guess will dictate what you get for it.
Check out one of the web sites like buy and sell to see what they are selling for.

I have a ford focus 1.6 diesel The road tax came down on these cars in July but because I have my car since 2007 I still have to pay the higher road tax, is this going to change and if not who will buy these cars second hand when one a year newer will have lower road tax.

Yes Revenue have confirmed a self employed person can use the civil servant allowances for mileage and overnight stays.
check my site for more details.

www.mcdowellandco.com/?page_id=24 (see number 3 and 6).

Also, again as I said on the site you can employ your spouse and pay her a salary ....see this link and check number 2.

http://mcdowellandco.com/?p=14

One to watch though is that she would loose entitlements to social welfare payments is she has not prsi contributions - check this with social welfare.

One to watch though is that she would loose entitlements to social welfare payments is she has not prsi contributions – check this with social welfare.

Hi Jason,
I'm a sole trader and I'd like some further advice on reducing my tax bill. Can you confirm I can claim back the following expenses as per revenue guidelines? Mileage allowance, subsistence, and overnight allowance? I also work from a home office so what percentage should I use for claiming back heat, light? Finally, my wife works in admin for me so to further reduce my tax bill how should I pay her? She is a full time mum but she still works with me? My earninngs are in excess €100k.
